Have an early breakfast at your lodge. Leave with packed lunch for a full day game safari at the crater. Descend into the 264sq km crater. Ngorongoro is thought to have formed about 2.5 million years ago from a large active volcano whose cone collapsed inward after a major eruption, leaving the present vast, unbroken caldera as its chief remnant. During your game drive expect to see elephants, black rhinoceros, leopard, lion, buffalo, zebras, grants and Thomson’s gazelles. Within the Ngorongoro Crater there is Lake Magadi, a shallow, azure blue, fiercely alkaline from sodium carbonate that is fringed by hundreds of long-legged pink flamingos. Enjoy your game safari till dusk. Return to lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
